As most of you now know, the IRS extended the normal April 15 tax day deadline to July 15, 2020 for the 2019 tax year. Many commentators, professionals and specialists in the field speculated that the IRS and US Treasury would provide a further extension of this time.
Well, the news is in and the IRS and US Treasury are declining to push this deadline any further, even though the impact of COVID-19 is still here and even ramping up in some states.
That means all taxpayers should be prepared to file and pay their taxes no later than July 15, 2020. The last possible option taxpayers have is to file an Form 4868, 6-month extension request, to push their filing deadline back to October 15, 2020. What is important to note about this is that this extension only applies to the filing of a tax return, and not the payment of taxes that are otherwise due.
